An affiliate program (which can also known as an online affiliate program or internet affiliate program or website affiliate program) is a form of Internet advertising that rewards the affiliates for driving traffic to the advertiser which results in a sale. The advertiser usually pays the affiliate a commission for this.

Strictly speaking - (from the perspective of an affiliate), a website is not needed, and being an online or internet program may refer to only having an email account and a list to send to.

The merchant or affiliate program owner however would have a website. In the relationship, the affiliate usually agrees to let the merchant advertise his products on the affiliate's website or in the affiliate's emails.

No stock or goods are required by the affiliate, and all advertising materials are provided by the merchant. In return, the merchant basically gets free advertising.

Basically, an affiliate program or affiliate marketing is one of the easiest and possibly the best way to earn profits online, unless of course you you would rather sell your own products online instead of advertising someone else's products on your website or in your email communications. Making profit on affiliate marketing programs, however, does not depend so much on the compensation method is it does on the traffic generated by your website or emails. A website that can attract more visitors or email marketing that circulates to a large list would generally have the greater chance of profiting in an affiliate program.
