How to Rate Your Role Model!

Author: Inga Yandell

The most important single influence in the life of a person is another person... Who is worthy of emulation. - Paul D. Shafer

Today there are so many people in all fields of life with the power to influence; we are literally spoilt for choice. With a smorgasbord of potential role models there exists no guidelines for choosing wisely a person of true worth to observe and follow.

In modern times a role model reflects diversity both in character and skill, their standard of living is measured against their drive to succeed. When we choose to emulate a person our values and actions are directly related to them, therefore it is relevant to reflect upon our role models and their quality of standards.

Reputation alone will not positively influence development in people those with impact must inspire us!

To decide on a suitable and empowering mentor that best embodies your goals and beliefs it is useful to consider the following criteria.

1. Does this person represent healthy habits?

A role model should encompass the best attributes of both emotional and physical health.

2. Is this person confident in developing relationships through quality people skills?

The art of conversation and the ability to charm others helps us to network and build success socially and professionally.

3. Do they seem balanced and show an understanding for their emotions?

Our well-being relies heavily on how we relate to ourselves. When we embrace both positive and negative emotions our experiences equip us with new wisdom for handling more of lifes challenges.

4. Is there a strong sense of self with this person, do they celebrate their individuality?

Being unique is a human quality that generates confidence and sets us apart from one another.

5. Is this person relentless in their pursuit of self-improvement through a continuous desire to learn?

Wisdom is not attained but grows with new experience and understanding, it is therefore an endless endeavour that must be pursued if we are to broaden our perspective and awareness of our world.

6. Is this person well spoken?

We improve our relations and communication through accurate expression of ourselves. It is the aptitude for elegance of speech that gives meaning to our words and advocacy from inspiration.

7. How thoughtful is your role model? Do they analyse their actions for consequence and show creativity to encourage initiative?

Authenticity teaches us to value our artistic abilities and honour our passions with purpose. It is also important for our personal growth to be responsible to others and ourselves.

8. Does this person teach you the value of a realistic understanding of our world?

The ability to observe and assess the truths of our world honestly and without judgement, affords us the insight to start implementing strategies to positively impact our lives.

A quality role model never places limitations on themselves; instead they embrace feelings of connection, worthiness, contribution, accomplishment, playfulness, balance and tranquillity.

Observing others is an invaluable practise for developing direction in our lives and if you want to become your best then consider your mentors wisely!

Very few men are wise by their own counsel, or learned by their own teaching. For he that was only taught by himself had a fool for a master. Ben Johnson

With good guidance may you all find inspiration and passion in life.
